Around 50 miles west of Zurich close to both French and German borders, and containing Switzerland's oldest university dating back as far as the mid-15th century. Basel is often referred to as a European Capital of Culture. Attractions within the city of include a wealth of museums and galleries, a particularly beautiful botanical garden, and a truly enormous carnival held in February. Worth a visit.
