The Old Town is divided into Niederdorf, full of cafés and small shops, with the enormous twin towers of the Grossmunster dominating the skyline with the other side of the river centred around Lindenhof with its more modern shops and offices. Nearby rise the graceful spires both of St Peter's, featuring the largest clock face in Europe, and the Fraumunster, a medieval church. Along the course of the western city wall, are some of Europe's most prestigious shopping streets, packed with jewellers and designer boutiques. What I really enjoyed though was just strolling around the cobbled streets, visualising what it must have been like to live in the heart of central Europe in medieval times. Of course, the aroma of world cuisine in the form of tapas and all sorts tasty morsels do bring one back to the 21st century, a heady mix of old and new.
