At 14:37 on Tuesday the 7th of September 1641 the first watch was manufactured (okay I made that up) but tracing its history back to the mid-17th century, the Swiss were winding their watches and clocks before blowing out their candles, donning their nightcaps and checking their francs under the mattress (no
swiss banking
for another couple of hundred years).
By the early twentieth century, the wristwatch become popular with the labour-saving self-winding wristwatch making a timely debut just before the Great Depression (okay maybe that was oxymoronic) to be followed over the decades by electrical, quartz, LED and LCD displays, Swatch etcetera.
In all that time, Swiss watchmakers have retained the craftsmanship and innovation to keep their leadership in the world watch market. Of course if you fancy a new one to replace your old ticker (not that ticker) you can check out the unrivalled range in many of Zurich's
shopping
districts.
